Droid phones

Everywhere we look we are seeing ads for TVs, video games and cell phones. Recently on Monday Night Football, there was an ad for a Droid phone. Everyone was kind of wondering what this is. This was a well done ad for a phone which is slowly gaining market share.

In a market where Apple and blackberries seem to be dominating, it seems every few years something changes. Think about 5 years ago, the only phone you ever heard about was the Motorola Razr. Five years later, Motorola has tried selling its cell phone division off to every possible company. Motorola’s success was so great that it hurt them.

Now Apple and blackberries seem to be the norm in the industry. Either a new blackberry or Iphone being released back to back, a new system seems to be taking over the market. It’s not a phone but a Phone Operating System. The Android platform is starting to spread to different phone makers and different providers. Android is doing the opposite of what apple seems to be doing. Android is making a platform which any developer can either make a program to customize or enhance your phone.

Every big phone company is now starting or testing a phone with this platform and it seems to be catching on. Experts predict that within the next 2 years, the market share will belong to phones running the android platform. The first model of this phone was the “Google” phone or G1. The G1 was a phone that featured touch screen and a full QWERY keyboard, but seemed to lack any decent power. Now the next generations of Android phones are being released and by different companies, a chance to continue its push in a large but crowded cell phone market.

Zombieland – Review

Zombieland

A movie made about a not to distant future of ours that captures the one main fantasy, bring back Bill Murray as the great comedian he is.

The movie starts out with a Michael Cera look-a-like explaining to us how zombies became to be. It was an outbreak of a certain medicine and started to spread throughout the world. Maybe this was the vaccine for Swine flu. As the movie progresses, the lead role explains to us his basic rules of survival and how being a loner in life survived the outbreak.

Once the introductions are over, the movie slowly introduces Tallahassee and Wichita. Once everyone establishes their roles in the movie, it breaks into a zombie killing story. It is your typical survive or die zombie movie but with a comedy twist of living. Well considering you are one of the last males to live, looking at life on the bright side must be hard to do.

One great aspect to the movie is the fact the out of all the celebrities houses to stay in, they choose Bill Murray. As they are enjoying themselves in his house, a Bill Murray zombie appears but is really himself. They break into several Ghostbusters scenes as they are trying to hype a possible movie.

The comedy is classic and woody Haralson was perfect for the role and seeing him act this well is rare. Emma stone is increasing her popularity in films as being the hard to get chick that breaks in the end. Overall a great movie but will be filing the bottom of a bargain bin in 3-5 years.

Crobar, 1221 Crescent, Montreal

On one of the most overhyped, overpriced streets in the city, it’s nice to find a simple drinking hole. That’s what Crobar is.  Located on the lower end of Crescent, and jammed between the more popular Hurley’s and Brutopia, Crobar is a little bar that lacks very little and provides a tun of value.

I first started going to Crobar because a former boss of mine was part owner. He no longer has any stake in the business though, but the bar is still running great under it’s initial ownership. It offers a full bar, but what sets it appart from it’s local competition is the $10 pitchers of Hemp Beer. It comes in several flavors and its a perfectly acceptable beer, making this by far the best bargain on Crescent street.

Crobar has two floors which each have their own atmosphere. On the main floor there’s the main bar and most of the seating area, which is sometimes partially converted to a stage for live bands. Crobar often gets live acts and due to the owner’s connections, often the quality of talent can be very rich and surprising. This area sometimes gets a little cramped but is very lively on the weekends. It looks like a hole the rest of the week though.

The top floor has a balcony for smokers, a second bar that almost never gets used, and a pool table with more comfortable seating around it. The balcony is very often filled with smokers, and quite often teens of questionable age. It’s a more relaxed atmosphere on the second floor, however it can be quite dead on weeknights. Nice place to lounge and get away from the hustle though.

All in all, the Crobar knows what it is and it doesn’t try to be anything else. It’s a drinking hole. The people who go there expect to drink and enjoy the company of other people who drink, and a little music from time to time. The prices can’t be beat and with the liquor flowing, good times are to be had. I can’t recommend this place for any occasion, but it will serve its purpose when you need to bend the elbow.

Bar Le Vegas, 2308 boul Marie-Victorin, Longueuil

Bar Le Vegas is the hidden gem of the Montreal area. Located on the South Shore, it doesn’t have the same kind of walk-up business as any clubs or bars downtown, but it doesn’t need it. On any given Saturday night, you can expect to wait outside untill there’s enough room to get in, and it’s worth the wait.

Generally speaking, I think strip clubs can be filed away into two categories. There are the dives where the girls look mostly sad and the men pretty seedy, and there are the ritzy clubs where everything is overpriced and intimidating. What I like about Vegas is that it apeals to the common person while still having a very high level of service. It’s clientel ranges from college folk just looking for a good time right to businessmen looking to relax. Noone looks creepy and everyone is having a great time, and I think that’s due to the focus of the club.

Vegas is a contact club, but it’s real draw is the stage shows. Almost all of the girls are outstanding, and most of them know how to dance really well. From time to time they even get a showgirl type who can really set the place on fire. It’s good to know that you can go to this place and enjoy it for not just the nudity and costly lap dances, but really exquisite dancing. Many of my female friends love going just to see the shows these girls put on. This place rivals Kama Sutra, which has probably the most athletic dancers, but it surpasses it by having girls who look like they are honestly having a blast.

What’s better is that the prices are reasonable enough that you don’t feel like you’ve paid to go to a strip club. Locations downtown will often charge as much as $11 for a mixed drink. Vegas charges around $5 for local beers, $5.75 for imports and under $7 for most mixed drinks. The cover is cheap too at only $3. Should you decide to want the company of one of the girls  in private, dances are $10 a song (downtown clubs charge $15) and you can go to the VIP area to keep a girl for 30 to 60 minutes at an even better rate.

The downside of this club is it’s popularity. On a weeknight it is generally comfortable, but the place is usually packed on Friday and Saturdays, so clients can get packed in there pretty tight. If all you’re looking for is some quick nudity, it may not always be worth the trip as it can be out of the way, and sometimes uncomfortable for how busy it is.

On the upside, the girls are plentiful and mostly very beautiful, so there shouldn’t be a lack of any to chose from. There are regular dancers of course, the usual turnover of fresh new faces, and the occasional showgirl guest stars. If you’re really looking for an evening out with friends with a good show, I can’t recommend this place enough.
